Where is the best place to find info about methadone/heroine addicted babies and their long term affects??? I have searched and searched but was wondering if anyone had any better info I can find.
Its VERY difficult to get info on kids. What state are you in and I can probably help connect you. Email me at handsheartsquiverfull@gmail.com and I will get you some info :)
It is a forum run by an RN, Sharon Dembinski, who is extremely knowledgeable about babies born with NAS (neonatal abstinence syndrome). The forum is actually for moms on methadone treatment but I am sure they would welcome you as well.
Methadone is the recommended treatment for pregnant, opioid addicted mothers. The outcomes for mom & baby are much better if the mom remains on methadone at a stable dose for the duration of her pregnancy. The baby may experience NAS (there is a 65% chance) but they can be cared for and treated in the NICU as they are gradually weaned from the medication. Most studies show little or no evidence of serious or long lasting problems for these babies.
Hi, I know in our state we actually have the only in-care newborn drug rehab center, either this side of the mississippi or in the US. It is call the PICC home or pediatric interim care center. Here is their website: http://www.picc.net/ I know that is all that they do, so if there is something that you actually have a question about and it isn't on their site or on the DVD that they offer, you could probably call or email them. I have heard phenominal things about everyone there. I hope that helps. As for long term, there are unfortunatly not very many studies done yet on the long term effects, but some of the nurses there may know what to expect better. I hope that helps.
I am so glad I came across this Blog, Can you please post info as you retrieve it on the subject of drug addicted babies. My adopted son was born in withdrawal from Crystal meth and cocaine
